We are a small family run business based in a village, on the coast road Galway, Ireland, the gateway to Connemara. Our aim is to supply the best quality handmade Irish Blackthorn Walking Sticks at a fair price. Our products are made from locally sourced bushes found in multiple along our rural roads and boheriens. Our business is based on the belief that our customer's needs are of the utmost importance. The Irish Blackthorn bush is quite and has extremely hard wood and small white flowers. The wood is close-grained, and the branches are covered with sharp spines when grown from the trunk of the bush. There are typically many knots in the wood, and the bark is a deep reddish-black. The bush itself is a close relative of cherries and plums. It grows up to four meters high, and is found in wild hedgerows, on rough farmland and on the edges of wooded areas. It is deciduous, i.e. it sheds and grows new leaves each year.
The purple fruits of the Blackthorn bush are called sloes and can be used to make jam (a preservative) and sloe gin (a liqueur popular at Christmas time) Although they are extremely prized, authentic blackthorn walking sticks are not easy to find. Here at Irish handmade walking sticks we have generations of experience crafting high quality materials to produce the best walking sticks possible. It can take three years to construct an authentic Blackthorn walking stick from the time the branch is cut. Cutting can only occur during a few weeks in mid-winter and then the sticks need to be seasoned for two years before they can finally be straightened. Only then can they be sanded and polished.
